Portsmouth VS. Burlington

I don't usually pay much attention to the newspaper (sorry, Alex, but its true), but this mornings Portsmouth Herald headline caught my eye. GRANITE VS. GREEN MOUNTAIN. Apparently there is a "friendly" competition going on between Portsmouth and Burlington for tourism supremacy. Very interesting...we have the ocean, you have a lake. If you take a look here you can find more information from the Burlington side of things, or here for the Portsmouth side. I say Portsmouth, but I'm a little biased.

Why? I never lived in Burlington. And I only lived in Vermont for six years! I'll be interested to see where Kate comes in on this...she likes both, I know. Have you ever been to Portsmouth? How do you know Burlington is better?

hmm. i love portsmouth for its blue cheese dressing, its almost european narrow alley ways and cobbles, its proximity to the ocean, its tiny little shops. burlington is having a hard time figuring out how to keep tiny little shops, and certainly could use a kitschy toy store like macro polo or a wild food joint like friendly toast. we do have a bull moose music store equivalent called pure pop.

burlington's church street is no longer the church street it was when i was younger - there was a yarn store, a fabric store, a leather and western store with a gorgeous indian motorcycle in the window. UVM still had a dairy bar on campus. the lake was much, much cleaner... when i try to think about what i like, often the things i miss come up more often, so maybe it's not fair of me to compare.

i DO like the south end near the old ship docks here in burlington. smaller one family homes, stained glass studio, art studios galore, vintage lighting shop, market, thrift shop, bread bakery, used bookstore, building salvage place... all kinds of neat stuff. alex lives there. but he's leaving it behind... did he mention that? he'll be an ex-pat soon himself. yes, true.

really, i shouldn't compare. i love the way i'm ringed in by hills, lakes and ponds here but hate the drunk crowds in my neighborhood. and i really and truly with all my heart long for the ocean more days than not. apples and oranges...

What's a Seven Days Poll? We're only partly Vermont. Do we still count?
